LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A judge has denied a change of venue for the trial of an Ohio man accused of killing a police officer in New Mexico last year.

Jesse Denver Hanes of Columbus is charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 16 shooting death of Hatch policeman Jose Chavez.

Third Judicial District Court Judge Douglas Driggers on Wednesday denied Hanes’ request to have the trial moved out of Dona Ana County on the grounds that media coverage of the case would make it impossible to empanel an impartial jury.

Hanes rejected a plea agreement last month and was scheduled to stand trial in August.

Driggers has set a new trial date of Sept. 25 because the August date interfered with a federal trial in which Hanes faces firearm and carjacking charges.
