BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A man already in prison for a hammer attack on an Iowa woman last year has been charged in a warrant with murder in a separate case.

Burlington police said in a news release Thursday that 25-year-old Layton Tapscott has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Julian Menke. Menke’s body was found Oct. 7 by police in a Burlington home.

Tapscott is currently serving a two-year sentence at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility for hitting a Burlington woman in her home with the claw end of a hammer two days after Menke was found dead. A police affidavit in that case says the woman recounted Tapscott saying she would “end up like Julian Menke.”

Online court records do not list an attorney for Tapscott.
