YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - A Mount Vernon mother has been charged in the 2015 death of her 5-year-old daughter, who accidentally shot herself in the face when she picked up a loaded handgun found in the family’s apartment.

Tantania Manners was arrested Wednesday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She’s being held on $5,000 bail. Information on her lawyer was not immediately available.

Westchester County prosecutors say Manners was charged under the theory of creating an unsafe environment for her daughter by allowing the sales and usage of narcotics in the home.

They say she also permitted “illegal, unsecured, loaded firearms” to be stored in the Yonkers apartment.

Manners is next due in Yonkers City Court on April 19.
