MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina judge says an 82-year-old man is not competent for trial for the stabbing death of his wife.

Defense attorney Lauren Williams told The Post and Courier of Charleston (https://bit.ly/2oszdfU) a judge this week ruled that Lester Chung of Goose Creek is mentally incompetent. Williams says Chung suffered a traumatic brain injury after his arrest.

Sixty-one-year-old Xiuying Wang was stabbed in 2012 as she was trying to move out of their home.

Chung has been under the care of the Department of Mental Health and is expected to have a hearing for a more permanent commitment.

Williams said Chung’s competency is not age-related although his ability to recover cognitive function may be affected by his age.

Prosecutor Bryan Alfaro agrees it’s unlikely Chung will become competent for trial.
