LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - More than 100 archaeologists, scholars and history buffs are gathering for a conference in an upstate New York community that’s one of the most artifact-rich places in the United States.

The New York State Archaeological Association is holding its 101st annual conference this weekend at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center in the village of Lake George.

The gathering is being held next door to the recreated French and Indian War fort that was constructed in the 1950s as a tourist attraction.

Lake George was the scene of intense military action between British and Colonial American forces and their French and Indian enemies from 1755 to 1759. Archaeological digs at the fort and in a nearby state park have uncovered thousands of artifacts dating back to the conflict.
