Commissioners to break ground on new prison

SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) - Officials in central Pennsylvania will break ground on a new prison.

WKOK-AM reports (https://bit.ly/2olOKmv) county commissioners have scheduled the event for the new Northumberland County Prison at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The prison complex will be built at the former site of Coal Township’s Northwestern Academy, which was destroyed in a fire in 2015.

Officials say the prison will hold 186 inmates. Commissioner Sam Schiccatano says the complex may include a drug rehab facility and a homeless shelter. Schiccatano says he is considering moving the Weatherization Department to the site as well.

The prison is scheduled to open in a year.
