FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - The school district intends to remove flooring underlayment containing mercury before turning an auxiliary gym into a wrestling room at Fort Dodge Senior High.

The Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/2pwlOZn ) that district officials say the removal will ensure that mercury vapors that could have been produced and could have caused long-term health problems won’t be present.

Work is expected to begin May 1 on removing the gym floor and the rubber underlayment and could take five to 10 days. District director of buildings and grounds Travis Filloon says the floor currently poses no danger to students or staff. But it will be replaced by cushioned flooring using foam pads.

The removal process is expected to cost around $84,000.
