The progressive activists pushing Sen. Bernard Sanders to leave the Democratic Party have invited the Vermont independent to a town hall event to discuss the possibility of creating a new third party.

Nick Brana, founder of the Draft Bernie for a People’s Party, and Cornel West announced they had sent an invite to Mr. Sanders, who has been working since the 2016 election to steer the Democratic Party in a more progressive direction.

“A town hall is the perfect forum to discuss the question on every progressive’s mind: ‘Should the progressive majority form its own party?’ ” Mr. Brana said during an appearance on Democracy Now.

The town hall is slated to take place in Washington, but the date has yet to be decided.

Mr. West on Monday said in an op-ed in The Guardian that he supports the Draft Bernie effort that aims to convince Mr. Sanders to sever ties with Democrats.
