FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) - About 200 Georgia-based soldiers from Fort Stewart are returning to Afghanistan.

The Army said in a news release Friday that troops from the 3rd Infantry Division headquarters will deploy this summer. The headquarters includes the division’s commander, Maj. Gen. James Rainey, and his command staff.

The 3rd Infantry soldiers will replace counterparts from the 1st Cavalry Division currently deployed to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. The 3rd Infantry’s headquarters returned from its last deployment there in the fall of 2015.

The U.S. still has about 9,800 troops in Afghanistan years after American soldiers ended their combat mission against the Taliban in 2014. Their mission now is focused on advising and assisting Afghan forces.
