GENEVA, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago woman has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges she fatally poisoned her husband with a smoothie spiked with prescription sleeping pills.

The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights reports (https://bit.ly/2pqIqJT ) 54-year-old Julia L. Gutierrez of Geneva entered the plea Thursday in Kane County court. She was sentenced to 22 years in prison. She’s been held without bond since she was arrested in her Eduardo Gutierrez’s 2016 death.

The plea gives Gutierrez access to mental health treatment while in prison. She had faced as much as 60 years in prison for the first-degree murder charge. She must serve her entire sentence.

Eduardo Gutierrez’s sister, Rachel Mooney, said her family has “immense sorrow.” Eduardo Gutierrez’s estate has sued Julia Gutierrez for wrongful death and negligence.
