CASSATT, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a man has been arrested on charges of assaulting another man with a shovel.
The State reports (https://bit.ly/2q9fvrF) 26-year-old Thomas Richard Johnson Jr. of Cassatt turned himself in and was charged Wednesday in connection with the attack April 15. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says in a news release that Johnson “nearly killed” the victim.
Matthews says the man, who was transferred to a hospital in Columbia, was able to tell investigators about the assault and his account was corroborated by witnesses. The assault followed an altercation among a group of friends.
Johnson was charged with first-degree assault and battery. He was being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
He was released from jail in March, where he was serving a sentence for domestic violence.
