DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Former Northern Iowa player Ali Farokhmanesh (fuh-ROAK’-muh-NESH’) is returning to the Missouri Valley Conference as an assistant at Drake.

Farokhmanesh has spent the last three seasons at Nebraska, most recently as the director of player relations and development. Drake coach Niko Medved announced the hiring Friday.

The 29-year-old Farokhmanesh played two seasons at UNI, where he helped the Panthers to a 53-16 record with two NCAA Tournament appearances. He’s best remembered for making a 3-pointer in the final minute to give UNI a four-point lead in a 69-67 upset of No. 1 overall seed Kansas in 2010, a victory that sent the Panthers to the Sweet 16 for the first time.

Farokhmanesh at Drake will get to be an on-court coach and leave campus to recruit for the first time.
