SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says its officers shot and killed an armed man on U.S. 101 in the San Francisco Bay Area.

CHP Officer Art Montiel says the shooting involving three officers happened at about 5:30 p.m. Friday on the shoulder of the freeway in San Mateo near State Highway 92, shutting down all northbound lanes during the evening commute.

Montiel says the suspect, who had a handgun, was pronounced dead at the scene. He did not say whether the man had fired the gun.

No further details were released.
