MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a man was found dead after a police chase in southern Virginia.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Friday that Martinsville Police were chasing a car on a road that led to Henry County on Thursday night, but lost sight of it. About 20 minutes later, officers found the car over an embankment and later heard a gunshot.

The sheriff’s office and state police responded to help find the driver and any occupants. The sheriff’s office says a man was found dead with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. His body was taken to the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The sheriff’s office says a search turned up money and a bag containing what’s believed to be drugs, a gun and ammunition.
