TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Two New Jersey corrections officers who are married to each other have been indicted in the alleged beating of an inmate.
Mercer County prosecutors say Isaac Wood III and Trachell Syphax each face two counts of official misconduct and single counts of tampering with public records or information. Both remain suspended without pay and it wasn’t known Monday if they have retained lawyers.
Prosecutors say the May 2016 attack occurred at the Mercer County jail.
They say Wood punched the inmate in the face and then kicked him in the head and body. Syphax allegedly saw the attack and didn’t stop it.
Both officers allegedly filed false reports about the attack. They were engaged at the time.
The inmate was treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries.
An investigation determined the attack was unprovoked and that the inmate didn’t resist.
