MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. (AP) - Police in Mount Holly say an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a young girl at a local park.
Local media outlets report authorities say Darvon Malik Fletcher of Charlotte is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 14-year-old Taylor Sotera Smith, who police say is also from Charlotte. Fletcher is being held in the Gaston County jail without bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
Mount Holly Police Chief Don Roper said it appears the shooting wasn’t random because the suspect and victim were familiar with each other.
Officers responding on Monday to a report of shots fired at a park found Smith, who they say had been shot multiple times. Smith died at a local hospital.
