MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) - Lawyers will be submitting briefs and other materials to the Muscatine City Council in May before the council decides whether to remove Mayor Diana Broderson from office.

The Muscatine Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2nXXwnt ) that Broderson defended herself at an eight-hour council hearing Saturday. She’s accused of willful misconduct and willful or habitual neglect of her duties. She’s said she’s the victim of a political witch hunt.

Among the accusations are allegations that she contacted city staff without permission of the city administrator, which would violate a city code section that says elected officials can contact staffers only through the city administrator. She said Saturday that she’d complied with his instructions to copy him on any emails to staffers but complained that council members were not asked to do the same.
