PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix couple has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in the shooting death of their 9-year-old son.

Wendy and Kansas Lavarnia entered their pleas Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court to charges of first-degree felony murder, child abuse and hindering prosecution in the death of their son Landen.

Police have said Wendy Lavarnia told investigators that her 2-year-old son picked up a gun she had left on a bed and shot his brother on March 20.

Investigators said they became suspicious when they found inconsistencies in the mother’s account and when Kansas Lavarnia showed up at the home with a gunshot wound to his upper arm.

Authorities have declined to say who they believe shot the boy and his father.
