BALTIMORE (AP) - Authorities have charged a carjacking suspect with attempted murder after he allegedly fired shots at a Baltimore City fire commander.

Authorities say 38-year-old Michael Awosika is charged with attempted murder, carjacking, assault, robbery, theft, and gun-related offenses.

Police were called Saturday afternoon to West Fayette Street, where a 38-year old woman told them that she was taking her 5-month old grandson out of her car when an armed man entered the vehicle. The woman was able to retrieve her grandson before the suspect drove away.

A short time later, the suspect crashed the car at the intersection of Martin Luther King Blvd and Pratt Street.

Police say the fire commander, who was driving a marked vehicle and was unaware of the carjacking, was shot at after stopping to help.
