LOS ANGELES (AP) - A gunman was found dead Thursday inside a huge Los Angeles home following a 10 hour standoff in which he fired several rounds at the woman who lives there during a domestic argument, police said.

A SWAT team discovered the man’s body during a sweep of the 9,000-square-foot (836-square-meter) house in the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood, Officer Drake Madison said.

The woman managed to escape unharmed when the man arrived at the sprawling residence and eventually began shooting. Officials said the incident began as a fight between the two, who were in an on-again-off-again relationship.

Police exchanged gunfire with the suspect during a standoff in an area where mansions are perched on hillsides with ocean views. No officers were hurt.

Lt. Chris Ramirez said the man was found dead with a gunshot wound on the home’s second floor.

“We don’t know if it’s going to be an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound or if it was caused by the officer-involved shooting,” Ramirez told reporters at the scene.

He could not immediately say where on the body the man had been shot or whether there were any guns nearby.

Neighboring homes were evacuated as the suspect kept police at bay. Several rounds of tear gas were fired into the house after he cut off phone negotiations with authorities.

Police said the suspect, who was in his 50s, was believed to have been drinking and possibly using drugs. Officials did not identify the man but said he had a criminal record involving alcohol-related arrests.

It was difficult to locate him because the house is so large, police said.
