FORKED RIVER, N.J. (AP) - An abandoned dog that was rescued after being found buried up to its neck in mud has died at a New Jersey shelter.

NJ.com reports (https://bit.ly/2uKhBA5 ) the dog named Mabel who was taken in by the Associated Humane Society died at the organization’s Popcorn Park Shelter in Forked River.

The dog was found Aug. 4 in an area commonly used by people abandoning pets. She was suffering from a urinary tract infection and conjunctivitis.

In a statement, the Associated Humane Society thanked the public for their outpouring of support. The shelter said Mabel’s story was “humbling.” Staffers said they considered themselves lucky for the opportunity to show the dog love and compassion.
