MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Four Mesa police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after evacuating people during a fire at an apartment complex and the city Fire and Medical Department credits the officers with saving lives.

Four other people were injured in the Thursday evening fire, including one woman carried from the apartment where the fire started, but officials say no one was critically injured.

Deputy Fire Capt. Forrest Smith says the efforts by police officers who arrived at the scene first avoided injuries to more people.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire. Its cause is under investigation.

The complex is located near Southern Avenue and Dobson Road.
