DEL RIO, Texas (AP) - A former South Texas city manager has been sentenced to 3½ years in federal prison for lying to the FBI in a public corruption probe.

Former Eagle Pass city manager Hector Chavez Sr. was sentenced Monday in federal court in Del Rio. The 68-year-old official had been implicated in “pay to play” bribery scheme involving Maverick County contracts.

Chavez had pleaded guilty to the charge under a plea agreement last March. He could have been sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Chavez resigned last year after being indicted in the case that prosecutors say involves bribes and Maverick County contracts.

Chavez was indicted on charges also including bribery, obstruction and falsifying records. Those charges have been dropped.
