FORMER OFFICER GETS 4 YEARS FOR SMUGGLING GUNS

A U.S. Attorney’s Office news release says 48-year-old Michael Freshko was sentenced Friday after previously pleading guilty to conspiracy to unlawfully export firearms. Court documents say Freshko used his position to bring weapons into the airport without going through screening. The guns were handed over to an associate who took them aboard commercial flights to the Dominican Republic.

MARIJUANA, LOADED GUN FOUND IN TEEN’S BACKPACK AT SCHOOL

The 13-year-old boy was taken to a juvenile detention center Wednesday after his arrest on firearm and drug possession charges. The Lee County Sheriff’s office report says a staffer at Gateway Charter Intermediate School told a school resource officer that the boy was smoking pot after seeing him alone in the back of a classroom with a strong odor of marijuana.

Florida man charged with stabbing mom to death

Michele Shimmel confronted her son, Nathaniel Shimmel, at their home Wednesday and asked why he was not looking for a job. Authorities say she threatened to kick him out of the house. Nathaniel told a detective he grabbed her when she tried to get away and kept stabbing her and just watched her die. The sheriff said she collapsed outside the front door and that Nathaniel stabbed her one last time in the back.

FLORIDA SHERIFF USING DATA TO MAP REAL-TIME HEROIN OVERDOSES

Collier County Sheriff’s Office said Friday it was the first in the state to use the overdose mapping program. The agency also created a heroin task force in 2015. Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said the technology will help alert law enforcement to overdose spikes caused by a bad batch of drugs or new types of drugs. Some can be absorbed through the skin and pose a risk for first responders

MAN GETS LIFE FOR FATALLY BEATING WOMAN DURING DRUG BINGE

Christopher Powell was sentenced Wednesday after jurors found him guilty of first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Authorities say Powell and others had been engaged in a drug binge with Carla Maria Hight and Marie Rachel Foxworthy at the women’s Fountain home in February 2016. Prosecutors say the party turned violent over a missing set of truck keys.
