PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-month-girl has been pronounced dead after being pulled from a backyard pool in Peoria.

The death Friday morning was the second child drowning in metro Phoenix within 24 hours. A 2-year-old girl died Thursday night after falling into a backyard pool in Mesa.

Peoria police say two adults and a 4-year-old child were home at the time and that responding officers found a man performing CPR.

The home had a pool fence, and Peoria police said they were investigating and had made no immediate arrests.

Mesa police said Friday their investigation continued but that the death of 2-year-old Aria Herrera was viewed as a “tragic accident.”

Police said she apparently entered the pool area by following a puppy which got through a mesh fence.
