PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A Fort Pierre has been cited for a weekend incident in which the semitrailer he was driving crashed into a Pierre travel agency.

Police say the midday Sunday crash caused up to $10,000 worth of damage to the Travel Leaders building and about $5,000 in damage to the truck.

Authorities say 62-year-old Daren Briggs told them he swerved because he thought he wouldn’t be able to stop quickly enough to avoid hitting a line of cars stopped at an intersection.

Briggs was cited for driving recklessly, leaving an accident scene, failing to report an accident immediately and failing to maintain financial responsibility. Police Capt. Jason Jones says more charges are pending.

It’s unclear if Briggs has a lawyer. A home telephone listing for him couldn’t be found.
