HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi inmate is back in custody after he escaped while making a court appearance.

The Hattiesburg American reports 36-year-old Fate Santee fled while making an initial court appearance at the Hattiesburg Municipal Court with shackles on both his hands and feet on Monday around 10 a.m.

Authorities say Santee was captured less than two hours later in the backyard of a residence, wearing boxer briefs and a pair of slip-on shoes.

Hattiesburg police spokeswoman Lt. LaTosha Myers-Mitchell says Santee was taken to a hospital to be examined before being returned to police custody.

Santee was re-arrested and now faces escape charges. His girlfriend, 24-year-old Diamond Kidd, was charged with aiding a felonious prisoner in an escape.

It’s unclear if they have lawyers. An investigation is ongoing.
