NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Two historic homes in Newport have been damaged by fire.

Authorities say no residents were injured in the blaze reported at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, but a dog that lived at one of the homes died in the fire. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.

Both of the damaged Second Street homes were built in the 1800s and both are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting residents who were displaced by the fire.
