BOWIE, Md. (AP) - A 72-year-old man was hurt after the small plane he was piloting crashed in a field in Maryland.

State police said Michael Paul Pillsbury, of Washington, D.C., told troopers that he was making his final approach to land at Freeway Airport in Bowie Thursday night when his single-engine Cessna 172 made contact with the tree line and overturned. Pillsbury said there was no lighting and he could not see the tree line as he approached the airport.

Pillsbury was taken to University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Pillsbury was returning from Ocean City.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
