LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A former Las Cruces school security guard who has been charged with restraining and sexually assaulting a teacher has denied the allegations.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports 59-year-old Tom Trujillo was arrested Monday on charges of kidnapping, criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact, battery and bribery of a witness.

Authorities say Trujillo entered the teacher’s classroom at Mesa Middle School and assaulted her in late September.

Trujillo’s attorney Jeff Lahann says the encounter was a “physical embrace” that was the “result of escalating flirtation between two consenting adults.”

Lahann says Trujillo did not force himself on her, and he did not threaten or restrict her in any way. Lahann says they’re confident Trujillo will be found innocent.

Trujillo has been employed with Las Cruces Public Schools since 2010.
