When I know I really want to look good behind the wheel, the 2017 Jaguar XF immediately comes to mind. Recently, I spent a week with the 2017 Jaguar XF S and it reminded me of my true love affair with this automaker.

In fact, there is nothing to criticize when behind the wheel of the XF. I had the S trim to add to the experience meaning sporty handling and comfort extraordinaire.

You know your game is on in this midsize luxury sedan with its sexy design and stellar interior cabin. This latest year model remains predominantly unchanged from 2016 since the XF saw a complete redesign last year.

Competition in the midsize luxury sedan market includes the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Take note on the Jaguar, however, you get the aluminum body making the experience lighter. Translation, better miles to the gallon and a smooth, crisp ride while the traffic moves aside when the Jaguar XF is coming.

For trims in 2017 the Jaguar XF is offered in five from the base to the Premium, Prestige, R-Sport and S.

The base begins with 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, LED running lights and taillights, the night time approach lighting, automatic wipers, push-button ignition, leatherette upholstery and a power-adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel that has shift paddles. The eight-way power front seats are the epitome of comfort and the five-inch driver information display keeps you in the know. There is also an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the must-have Bluetooth connect options, USB port and 11 speakers.

On the Premium trim you get the additional auto-dimming side mirrors, driver seat memory settings, a rearview camera and 40/20/40-split-folding rear seats.

Midway up the trim line the Prestige levels offers the Premium goodies along with 19-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, authentic leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel and front seats. The blue interior accent lighting is a nice standout and you also have voice controls and a smartphone-app for a variety of different needs.

On the R-Sport trim there are 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, a rear spoiler and a good list of safety extras like lane keeping assist and forward collision mitigation. There is a first-rate exterior and interior package on this trim with a sport vibe and sportier front seats.

The top of the line S trim has a stronger engine than in the lesser trims and comes with 20-inch wheels. You also will benefit from the addition of the adaptive suspension, red brake calipers and a classy exterior boasting gloss black and chrome.

On all the trims you can add packages to match your additional needs and desire. The Premium trim comes with a Cold Climate package or the Prestige trim with the extra Comfort and Convenience pack that includes air conditioned seats and a power-closing trunk lid.

On the R-Sport and S trim there is an upgrade on the interior that gives you a power rear sunshade and manual rear side window shades.

For stand-alone features you get some cool wheel design choices and a variety of different interior trims.

Under the hood the 2017 Jaguar XF has an eight speed automatic transmission. One engine is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with 380 horsepower on the S trim or 340 horsepower on the other trims with 332 pound-feet of torque. The second option is the new turbo diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine offering 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque. The rear or all-wheel drive is available on all the trims.

Take note of the All-Surface Progress Control offered on the XF for low traction needs. The Adaptive Surface Response mode takes over for you adjusting the driving experience for the best ride in regard to brakes, transmission and stability control.

Safety standards on the 2017 Jaguar XF are the traction and stability control, antilock brakes, front side and side curtain airbags and the standard rearview camera. As you increase the trim level or add packages the safety technology is added. The Vision pack, which shines with premium safety features is available on the Premium and Prestige trim levels.

As for the driving experience, the minute you step inside the 2017 Jaguar XF you get the feeling it is not business as usual. There is a red starter button and once it is engaged a rotary shift dial rises out of the console to get the driving experience started.

The best materials are used inside the XF and there is plenty of room in the front or back for you and even your tallest of friends. Head and legroom, even in the backseats is above and beyond par. The trunk is a spacious at 19.1 cubic feet allowing for packing to head out on a world tour. If that doesn’t happen to be large enough though, there is the split-folding rear seatback option with a pass-through door.

While just about everything is controlled via the InControl Touch infotainment system there are two different sizes to choose; the eight-inch touchscreen or the “Pro” version at 10.2 inches.

The knobs and controls are easy to use, but in a world of thinking fast, the Jaguar audio system was in a bit of a mellow mode.

Behind the wheel you can feel the power of the engine is powerful with a light touch. Perfectly sleek and refined, the ambient lighting and comfortable seats is the essence of complete satisfaction – British style, of course.

Should You Need to Know: Take note for 2017 the Jaguar XF has a new engine, the 2.0-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with a nod to fuel economy.

Miles: On the 2017 Jaguar XF S I drove mileage came in at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

Cost: The 2017 Jaguar XF S with some additional packages added had a price tag of $77,085.
