PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona Senate panel has approved a plan increasing vehicle license fees, extending the state gas tax to propane and adding an extra registration fee on electric cars to help fund road improvement projects.

The proposal from Sen. Bob Worsley in Senate Bill 1146 is designed to provide a dedicated funding stream for the state Highway Patrol of about $120 million a year. That would free up money now taken from a fund dedicated to highway repairs and allow it to be again used for roads.

Another Worsley proposal that passed the Senate Transportation and Technology Committee Tuesday allows counties to increase gas taxes by 10 cents a gallon to fund local roads. Senate Bill 1147 requires a public vote.

Both passed unanimously and now go to the full Senate.
