House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy threw a couple of his colleagues under the love bus Tuesday when the chamber’s GOP leadership met the press Tuesday morning.

The California Republican, speaking third at the briefing, opened his remarks by noting the date and wishing his wife Judy a happy Valentine’s Day.

“Would you two like to come back up?” Mr. McCarthy then jokingly asked colleagues Rep. Kevin Brady and Rep. Greg Walden, who had preceded him to the dais and neglected to mark the day.

Every lawmaker who followed Mr. McCarthy, including House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, was careful to start out their remarks with their own personal Valentine’s Day shout-out. Washington state Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who chairs the House Republican Conference, revealed that husband Brian proposed on Valentine’s Day 11 years ago.

“He did it right,” she said.
