HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) - San Bernardino County authorities say a man drowned while trying to rescue his dog from the California Aqueduct in Hesperia.

Sheriff’s officials say the 58-year-old man was walking along the waterway with his wife and three dogs when one of the animals fell in Tuesday.

The man approached the water and tried to grab the dog, but fell in himself. Officials say emergency personnel rescued the man after about 15 minutes but he died at a hospital.
