GARDENA, Calif. (AP) - Police say a man who fired a gun during a disturbance in a Gardena parking lot has died after being shot by a police officer.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says Gardena police officers were patrolling West Rosecrans Avenue when they noticed a security guard trying to quell a disturbance in the parking lot of a local business. Investigators say as the officers approached, one of the men involved in the scuffle fired a gun and then ran off.

Authorities say an officer shot the man as he attempted to apprehend him. They say the suspect, whose name wasn’t released, was shot in the torso. He died at a local hospital.

Officials said two handguns were recovered from the scene.
