Actor Shia LaBeouf contends that President Trump is creating a divide in America (“Actor Shia LaBeouf brings anti-Trump piece to New Mexico,” Feb. 19, 2017). I say he’s got things reversed: The divide was already there and it created Mr. Trump. Allow me to explain.

Early in life, I embraced the notion that everyone is equal before God and man, as stated in the Bible and in our nation’s founding documents. I believe that most of my peers and I were successful in honoring these ideals by the way we lived our lives. Our efforts have, however, been rewarded with derision, anger and violence.

In spite of our efforts we have been figuratively poked in the eye our entire lives for being white, male, Christian, straight, educated, successful, patriotic and law-abiding. We have been unfairly marginalized in education, the media, the arts, the courts and politics. We’ve endured a president who demanded we wring the bias from our souls — and then pursued policies that exposed the bias in his own soul. The hopeful promises of his Chicago victory speech were forgotten.

We have had enough.

In 2016 we chose a champion to reclaim our rightful place in America. Mr. Trump is a man who speaks the truth simply. He keeps his promises. He rebukes those who cause us to doubt ourselves by misleading us. He obeys and enforces our laws. Most importantly, he honors the same ideals we do and puts them into action.

Mr. Trump is closing the divide, and I think that’s what Mr. Lebouf and others like him are really afraid of.
