NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A teenage driver who struck an 83-year-old man in Newport who later died from the injuries is facing charges.
Newport police tell WPRI-TV (https://bit.ly/2kIN5pk ) that they will be charging the 17-year-old Jamestown boy with failure to yield at a crosswalk, as well as possession of marijuana and a provisional license violation.
The victim, Donald Ritter, was crossing Broadway at a crosswalk on his way to a restaurant when he was struck on Feb. 8. He died last week at Rhode Island Hospital. He was an avid sailor and had been a Newport resident since 1978.
Police haven’t released the boy’s name and say his alleged violations will be heard at the state’s traffic tribunal.
