PROVO, Utah (AP) - A 33-year-old Provo woman has been sentenced to up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to child abuse homicide charges in the heroin-related death of her infant daughter.
A judge sentenced Cassandra Richards Wednesday to anywhere from zero to five years and recommended she receive credit for nearly nine months already served in the Utah County Jail.
An autopsy report determined Richards’ one-year-old daughter Penny Cormani had a lethal amount of heroin in her system when she died in December 2015.
The (Provo) Daily Herald reports (https://tinyurl.com/h8ldkx8) that Richards told officers responding to an emergency call that she fed the baby a bottle of milk before putting her down for a nap. She said her daughter was unresponsive when she went to check on her about an hour later.
