ATLANTA — Peter Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., stunned his supporters Saturday by announcing he was ending his campaign for chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

“I now realize that it is time for this process to move on without me,” Mr. Buttigieg told members, drawing murmurs of disappointment from his backers.

Mr. Buttigieg tried to position himself as the an alternative to Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, but said Saturday that the math was not in his favor..

“It looks like I am not going to be the next chair,” he said.

He did not endorse another candidate in the race.
