KEYPORT, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey town has cut ties with the law firm of a Democratic gubernatorial candidate over a campaign contribution that violated local law.
Joseph Baumann, an attorney for Keyport, said in a letter to Assemblyman John Wisniewski that he was “disqualified” from further representing the Monmouth County town. The news was first reported Monday by Politico.
Wisniewski’s firm donated $1,000 to the Monmouth County Democratic Committee in October 2014. But local pay-to-play ordinances prohibit individual political donations over $300.
Wisniewski says he’s seeking a refund and that the money was given “inadvertently.”
Wisniewski is one of about a half-dozen Democratic candidates seeking to succeed Republican Gov. Chris Christie in this year’s election. Christie is term-limited and set to leave office in January 2018.
