BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police say a federal building in Burlington was placed on lockdown as authorities investigated a suspicious envelope containing a mysterious white powder.

Police Deputy Chief Shawn Burke says the federal building was closed around noon on Monday. It reopened three hours later.

U.S. postal inspectors investigated the origin and purpose of the package. Police say the envelope was addressed to the court. A hazardous materials team concluded it wasn’t dangerous.

Police wouldn’t say where in the building the package was found.

The building contains a post office and federal offices, including the U.S. Attorney’s office, U.S. District Court and U.S. Marshals Service. It wasn’t evacuated.

Police say a suspicious package was also found near the building last week. The box was determined to be a box full of wires.
