SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County sheriff’s officials say a woman found dead off a rural dirt path over the weekend had been reported missing by her husband a week earlier.

The Union-Tribune newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/2jzccu3 ) hikers found Melissa Whitby’s body Saturday near Jamul, about 20 miles east of downtown San Diego.

Lt. Kenn Nelson says Whitby had suffered apparent trauma to the upper body, and her death has been ruled a homicide. No suspects have been identified.

Nelson says the victim had been reported missing by her husband on Dec. 31. The man told investigators he had last seen his wife at their Jamul home.

The newspaper says Whitby was remembered as a passionate nurse and caring co-worker at Villas Las Palmas Healthcare Center in El Cajon.
