TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a Tucson woman is accused of child abuse after her 5-year-old daughter was badly burned by hot water in a bathtub.

Pima County Sheriff’s officials say 28-year-old Samantha Osteraas is the girl’s adoptive mother.

She’s been booked into the Pima County jail on two counts of suspicion of child abuse.

It was unclear Tuesday if Osteraas has a lawyer yet.

Sheriff’s deputies went to the woman’s home on the night of Dec. 29 and the girl was immediately taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Detectives with the crimes against children unit took over the investigation and determined the burns weren’t accidental.

Authorities say the girl remains in critical condition.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety has removed Osteraas‘ three other children from the home.
