TREVORTON, Pa. (AP) - Authorities in Northumberland County say intense flamed prevented them from reaching a woman who died in a house fire that displaced seven others.

Fire officials say the one-story house collapsed into the basement shortly after firefighters arrived on the scene in Zerbe Township early Tuesday.

They say another woman and three children were taken to a hospital for treatment following the 3 a.m. fire. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Trevorton Fire Co. Chief Edwin Reed tells The News-Item of Shamokin ( that frigid temperatures and a lack of public water in the mountainous area made the fire more difficult to fight. He says tanker trucks had to go six miles round-trip to fill up at a hydrant.

Authorities say the fire was brought under control by 4:30 a.m.
