BRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) - State police say a driver who led a trooper on a brief pursuit was later killed when his car struck a utility pole.

The pursuit began around 9 p.m. Friday on Route 49 in Bridgeton, when the trooper spotted a vehicle that matched the description of one that had struck a Bridgeton police officer earlier that night.

The trooper activated the lights and sirens of the marked troop car but the driver refused to stop. The trooper soon decided to end the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle.

The fatal crash occurred a short time later when 21-year-old Devonte Brooks apparently lost control of the vehicle while going around a curve on eastbound Route 49 “at a high rate of speed”.

The Millville man was pronounced dead at the scene.
