PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was dragged several blocks under a hit-and-run vehicle.

Sgt. Mercedes Fortune says the man who died was running across a street early Saturday morning when he was struck and that the vehicle’s driver failed to stop.

Fortune says a witness provided police with information that helped officers locate the vehicle and find the victim’s body lodged underneath.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fortune says police have located and detained the driver and continue to investigate circumstances of the incident.

Fortune says she doesn’t know whether the driver knew he’d hit someone and whether there was a body lodged underneath the vehicle.

No identities were released.

This story has been revised to correct the description of what was found lodged underneath.
