SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Ana police say a quick-thinking officer used a tourniquet to help save a motorcyclist whose leg was partially severed in a crash.

Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says the motorcyclist was sent flying after being struck by an SUV in an intersection Friday.

The motorcyclist was bleeding heavily from the injured leg and the officer immediately applied a tourniquet until paramedics arrived.

Bertagna tells the Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/2jlnNw1 ) the officer’s actions are credited with helping save the life of the motorcyclist, who is expected to survive.

The Santa Ana Police Department is working to train all of its officers on application of the life-saving device.

Officials said Saturday it wasn’t yet known whether the driver of the SUV, who stopped after the crash, will be cited.
