CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by a Chicago police officer as a 34-year-old Chicago man.

The Cook County medical examiner says Herbert Johnson was pronounced dead at 7:09 a.m. after undergoing surgery earlier Sunday.

Chicago police say officers were on patrol in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s West side when they heard gunshots and began chasing the man. Police say the officer fired when the man “ran to an alley and confronted them with a weapon.”

No officers were injured. Police say two women and a man were hurt in the shooting that prompted officers to chase the man.

Police say the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating. Officials say the officer who fired the shots will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.
