DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - An Arab American foundation has launched a fund to support Syrian refugee families.

The Center for Arab American Philanthropy says it has raised $50,000 so far for Michigan refugees through its Building Blocks for New Americans Fund. Last month, it provided money to deliver furniture to five families and helped with rent payments for many of the 25 families the fund supports.

The families were identified through Dearborn-based ACCESS, the social services agency of which the foundation is part.

Officials say donations spur matching funds from other donors. They say the money helps Syrians build a new life after fleeing war and strife in their homeland.

The foundation aims to expand the fund beyond Michigan.
