WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - A nursing school in northeastern Iowa has announced receipt of a more than $3 million gift - the largest in its history.

UnityPoint Health-Waterloo and Allen College said Tuesday that the estate of Edward Jesse Jr., a Jesup-area farmer, is donating $3.1 million for an endowed scholarship fund for the school’s students.

The Edward W. Jesse Estate Endowed Scholarship will be presented annually to students based on financial need, personal qualifications and signs of academic success.

Jesse died in 2013 at the age of 78. He had been a longtime farmer in Black Hawk and Buchanan counties and had donated land in Jesup in 2008 for UnityPoint’s Jesup Clinic. His total lifetime giving to Allen College in Waterloo is nearly $3.26 million.
